Key takeaways
- NSE lists 16 weekday trading holidays for equities in 2026, and 4 more holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday.
- Commodity derivatives follow a different pattern: on most holidays the morning session is closed but the evening session is open.
- 8 November 2026 (Diwali Laxmi Pujan) is a trading holiday, with a Muhurat session whose timings NSE will notify by circular.
In plain words
A trading holiday is a weekday when the exchange stays shut, so you cannot place or square off trades. NSE announces the list for the full year in advance, and knowing it saves you from planning an exit on a day the market is closed.

Equity derivatives
The pre-open session is the same as equities. The regular session runs from 9:15 AM to 3:40 PM. The set-up cut-off for position limit and collateral value, and the trade modification and exercise end time, are both 4:15 PM.
Commodity derivatives
The normal market runs from 9:00 AM to 11:30 PM. For internationally referenced non-agri commodities, NSE lists a trade end time of 11:30 PM or 11:55 PM depending on US daylight saving time.
How many trading days does 2026 have?
2026 has 261 weekdays (Monday to Friday). Subtract the 16 weekday equity holidays and you get 245 regular trading days. The weekend holidays change nothing, since those days were already closed. The Muhurat session is a special case and is not counted here.
7 stretches of three or more closed days in a row appear in the list:24–26 Jan, 3–5 Apr, 1–3 May, 26–28 Jun, 12–14 Sept, 2–4 Oct, 25–27 Dec.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every segment shares one holiday list. Equities and commodity derivatives differ, as the two tables above show.
- Treating a trading holiday and a clearing holiday as the same thing. NSE publishes them as separate lists, so check the clearing tab if settlement matters to you.
- Planning a stop-loss or exit around a long weekend without remembering that you cannot act while the market is closed.
- Reading the Diwali note as “Muhurat is at its usual time”. NSE says the timings are notified later by circular.
- Using a list from a blog or a broker app without checking NSE. Lists get revised.
Where to verify
Open the NSE holidays page, pick the product (Equities, Commodity Derivatives and so on) and the year, then compare with the tables above. Use the Trading Holidays and Clearing Holidays tabs as needed.

Frequently asked questions
Is the market open on Saturday and Sunday?
No. NSE says equity trading runs on all days except Saturdays, Sundays and holidays declared by the Exchange in advance.
Is the equity market open on 1 January 2026?
Yes. 1 January is not on the equity holiday list. In commodity derivatives the morning session is open and the evening session is closed.
What happens if a holiday falls on a weekly options expiry?
Expiry moves to the previous trading day. Check NSE's circular for the exact contract.
What is a settlement holiday?
A day when the exchange is open for trading but clearing and settlement are closed, so trades done that day are settled on the next working day.
Is the market open on 8 November 2026?
It is a trading holiday for Diwali Laxmi Pujan, with a Muhurat session to be held that day. Timings are to be notified by NSE.
Why does the commodity list show Closed and Open on the same day?
The segment has a morning and an evening session, and on most holidays only the morning session is closed.
